Introduction to Bone Health

Osteoporosis is a phenomenal public health problem. Current estimates on a global scale are that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men older than 55 years will suffer from osteoporosis in their lifetime.

The projected rise of osteoporotic fractures worldwide to 6.26 million in the year 2050 (compared with 1.66 million in 1990) suggests the future economic impact of osteoporosis is of extreme concern. The application of lifestyle advice needs to be given at three different levels: universal primary prevention; selective prevention for high-risk groups; and targeted prevention for individuals. Sensible and simple nutritional and lifestyle advice, which is based on sound scientific evidence, is of paramount importance to encourage the optimization of bone health throughout the lifecycle.
